Fabrizio Romano, a renowned journalist for Caught Offside, has opened out on European heavyweights Barcelona and Manchester United’s interest in Jeremie Frimpong in his Daily Brief for Caught Offside.
The 22-year-old came up through the ranks at Manchester City before making his senior debut for Scottish Premier League powerhouses Celtic. He spent two seasons in Scotland before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.
Frimpong has come into his own as a powerful full-back at the BayArena. He is a vital piece in Xabi Alonso’s system, blessed with pace and power. The flying Dutchman has one goal and four assists in six games for Leverkusen this season as they maintain their lead in the Bundesliga standings.
Frimpong had previously attracted interest from numerous elite teams, including Manchester United and Barcelona. The former already has Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot in the post, but may use someone with more energy.
However, Romano has stated that, while the Red Devils were interested in the 22-year-old in 2022, they did not make a significant effort to sign him this year.
It is debatable whether this is because Erik ten Hag is satisfied with his possibilities in the role or because Frimpong does not fulfill their requirements.
Barcelona, on the other hand, expressed interest but did not prioritize Frimpong. The Spanish champions had been tracking Joao Cancelo all summer, and the Bayer Leverkusen star was only an option.
Given the form of the agreement that brought Cancelo to the club, it makes sense that Barcelona chose the Portuguese ace given the club’s financial difficulties.
Friminpong’s good start to the season serves as a reminder to all clubs that the kid is a player to watch.
Keep an eye out for. Should Leverkusen pull off the improbable, the 22-year-old will play a key part.
It remains to be seen whether Barcelona or Manchester United would renew their interest in the future. For the time being, the player is continuing to build a name for himself in the Bundesliga.
