Andros Townsend, a former Newcastle United winger, has officially joined Premier League newcomers Luton Town.

Since departing Everton at the end of his contract in the summer, the 13-cap England international has been without a club.

Townsend participated in preseason training and games for Burnley and received a contract offer before Vincent Kompany’s team changed its mind.

Fourty days have passed since the summer transfer window in England shut but the 32-year-old has been handed a lifeline by the Hatters – signing a short-term deal until January.

“I feel like it’s a good fit and these last couple of weeks have been good for both parties,” said Townsend, who will wear squad number 30. I believe it has to be right, and I believe we have both given it some thought over the past two weeks.

“I’ve seen where I can help this team and on the flipside the manager has seen where I can help – whether that’s on the pitch, in the dressing room or on the training field – with my enthusiasm and experience.

“Plus, Luton are my local team – I live 20-25 minutes away so I’ve kept my eye on their progress and watching the Championship play-off final and see them win promotion was great for the club.

Townsend began his professional career with Tottenham Hotspur, where he made 93 appearances before transferring to Newcastle in January 2016 for a fee of £12 million.

He made an impression at St. James’ Park, scoring four goals in 13 games, but his time there was cut short when he decided to join Crystal Palace when United was demoted from the Premier League.

Six months later, Townsend was on the verge of moving back to Tyneside, but Mike Ashley, the owner of the Magpies, objected. Townsend played for Selhurst Park for five years and fell just 15 short of 200 games.

Once a free agent in 2021, the footballer rejoined his former manager Rafa Benitez. Before a knee injury ended his Goodison Park career early, he made 27 appearances.
