Douglas Luiz insists his form over the past season is proof that his decision to commit his future to Aston Villa was the correct one.
The midfielder was the subject of three bids from Arsenal last summer, but Villa declined each offer late on deadline day, roughly 24 hours after Luiz scored direct from a corner at the Emirates Stadium in a 2-1 defeat. One month later, Luiz signed a new bumper contract with the club he joined from Man City in 2019 for £15million.
Luiz has since made 140 Premier League appearances and played a key role in Villa’s bid to qualify for European football last season under Unai Emery. He featured in all but one league game last term and recorded 12 goal contributions to establish himself as a star player in a squad littered with talent.
Asked about his decision to pen a new deal at Villa, Luiz told Placar: “Of course, Villa is a big club. I believe the decision I made was the right one. I had a great season, and the coach has helped me a lot.
“He helped my evolution within the team, my personal characteristics improved and I had an excellent season. It was my best season since I joined the club so I’m very happy with that.”
Luiz bagged seven goals in all competitions, including one from a free-kick, and two direct from corner kicks. A week before catching Aaron Ramsdale out in the Arsenal goal, he restored parity for Villa in the Carabao Cup second round clash against Bolton Wanderers.
