Agent says Liverpool wanted to sign £25m player in 2019 but he chose Everton instead
Liverpool were reportedly interested in signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin in 2019 before the midfielder decided on a move to Everton.
According to the player’s agent, Bernard Collignon, Jurgen Klopp was keen on bringing the-then Mainz star to Anfield before Liverpool settled on a move for Fabinho.
As we know, Gbamin chose to sign for Everton in a deal worth £25m, though the transfer quickly deformed into a nightmare for the former Bundesliga midfielder.

Gbamin spent the best part of two seasons out on the sideline through injury, with the Covid-19 pandemic also playing a massive part in the Ivorian’s failed Everton career.
Things could have been different had the midfielder rejected Everton, with Collignon saying: “Jurgen Klopp, who managed Mainz, had wanted JP before signing Fabinho.
“But we chose Everton because if you arrive straight away at a big club in England, it’s very difficult to make it.”

Football is a massive game of ‘what ifs’, and Gbamin joining Liverpool instead of Everton in 2019 is certainly one of them.
The midfielder’s career has never been the same since choosing the blue half of Merseyside over the red, and it’s easy to think that Gbamin wouldn’t be in the position he’s in now.
Indeed, Liverpool without Fabinho during their Premier League golden era is a strange enough thought on it’s own, yet Gbamin could have succeeded at Anfield had Klopp managed to land his man in 2019.
