Zak Johnson, a young defender, will remain on loan at Hartlepool United until January, according to confirmation from Sunderland. The 19-year-old’s initial one-month contract, which ended earlier this week, was signed when he joined the National League team in September. However, the clubs have decided to prolong Johnson’s stay, as ChronicleLive revealed earlier this week, and he will stay at Victoria Park to continue playing regularly for the first team.

Johnson has started six games for Pools, but missed their midweek defeat at Halifax Town after limping out of their defeat at Aldershot Town last weekend with a groin injury. Johnson told Hartlepool’s official website: “I’m delighted to extend my loan with the club. I’ve enjoyed my time at Pools so far and feel as though I’m developing well.

“I’ve enjoyed getting games under my belt and gaining experience in senior football, and hopefully we can start picking up some good results in the coming weeks.

Johnson’s injury is not thought to be a major concern; he will be evaluated this week before Pools manager John Askey selects his team for Saturday’s Victoria Park match against Rochdale.
