Everton: Pundit gushes over gem that ‘ticks all the boxes’ v West Ham

‘Ticks all the boxes’ – MOTD pundit wowed by Everton player in 1-0 win v West Ham

Shay Given gushes over Jarrad Branthwaite as Everton gem ‘ticks all the boxes’ v West Ham United

Shay Given has gushed over Jarrad Branthwaite, suggesting the Everton defender “ticks all the boxes” following his display against West Ham United.

Sean Dyche’s side ran out 1-0 winners at the London Stadium on Sunday (29 October) as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the Toffees’ only goal to give Everton their third win of the Premier League season and move them five points clear of the relegation zone.

While the striker’s goal earned him plenty of plaudits from fans and pundits alike, Given was eager to praise the defensive performance from the Blues, paying tribute to James Tarkowski’s display, but mostly focusing on the “solid” showing from Branthwaite.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2 (29 October) he said: “This is young Branthwaite again he’s very quick, 21 years of age, and he’s a left footer as well. This guy ticks all the boxes. can he play out the back? Of course, he can. Nice and calm on the ball, playing the right areas at the right time.

“I like this bit, he just eased Jarrod Bowen out and you see a bit of a fistbump. It’s a bit old school, but I like a defender who can celebrate defending and keeping clean sheets. Can he play it long on the diag to Calvert-Lewin? Of course, he can.

“This is the goal he’s on the front foot, up against Antonio one of the strongest centre-forwards in the Premier League and he’s not scared to get into that physical battle with him as well.

“He was linked recently with Liverpool, which Everton fans won’t be happy with me saying, but a couple more clubs have been looking at him, but he’s got a big future.”

Old school

Branthwaite has been in excellent form so far this season and the 21-year-old has been a joy to watch for Everton supporters as there seems to be very little that he cannot do on a football pitch as he goes from strength to strength in the Premier League.

The defender didn’t put a foot wrong against the Hammers, winning a combined five duels in the match, making seven ball recoveries and 10 clearances alongside Tarkowski in a display that gave Everton’s front players a platform to build from [Fotmob].

What makes this even more impressive, as Given pointed out, was that this commanding display came against Michail Antonio who is one of the strongest players in English football. To keep him that quiet at only 21 years old is seriously impressive.

Branthwaite certainly does have a big future and Everton supporters will be hoping that future lies at Goodison Park despite the recent murmurings of interest from elsewhere. The Toffees have done well to tie him down to a new deal and hopefully, he will be playing in blue for many years to come.
