After a fierce battle, Eddie Howe’s team defeated the Gunners 3–0 thanks to a goal from Anthony Gordon in the second half.

The goal itself is surrounded by contentious events since it took the VAR more than four minutes to determine whether it should be upheld.

Before Joe Willock crossed the ball in, it appeared as though the ball had left play, and Joelinton appeared to have shoved Gabriel in the back before handballing it.

Finally, VAR attempted to determine if the goal was offside but was unable to do so because of insufficient information.

After the goal, Mikel Arteta was incensed, but Howe responded with considerably more composure and poise.

“We believed that each VAR check that was conducted would ultimately cost us money. Although I initially thought it was a good goal, the referee was hesitant. Clearly happy that the goal was granted; it was a solid goal in our opinion,” he stated via Chronicle Live.

It was more of a genuine struggle between two sides than that. Teams understood that winning required fighting. It wasn’t a graceful game. The fact that there were many flying balls indicated how difficult the game was. Thank goodness, we prevailed.”
