David Ornstein claims he’s been advised to not rule out Tottenham Hotspur target Ivan Toney seeing out his contract at Brentford.

In an interview with NBC Sports, the journalist from The Athletic provided an update on Ivan Toney’s future in light of Spurs interest.

After losing Harry Kane to injury over the summer, Tottenham may be looking to add another striker during the upcoming transfer window.

Of course, Son Heung-Min has been in outstanding goal-scoring form, so Ange Postecoglou has done admirably without a No. 9 thus far.

However, Tottenham has reportedly expressed interest in signing Toney as other elite Premier League teams start vying for his services.

Spurs are reportedly among the teams eager to sign the 27-year-old in January, according to a recent report from The Times.

Toney violated the FA’s gambling standards and is currently serving an eight-month sentence. But David Ornstein has provided the most recent information on his future, and he is scheduled to resume activity in mid-January.

Toney might go for free from Brentford.
Ornstein claimed in an interview with NBC Sports that Tottenham is “worth watching” with regards to signing Toney.

The reporter further asserted that the likelihood of the Bees star leaving Gtech Community Stadium in summer 2020 instead of January 2021 is higher.

However, the England international might stay at Brentford to finish out his deal.

“I think we need to show a bit of calm with this,” Ornstein stated. “To my knowledge, there’s been no movement so far, and this reported asking price of in excess of £100 million that Brentford have allegedly put on him, I don’t know of them putting an asking price on him so far.”

“I believe a lot of this scrutiny may have been stoked by the fact that he shifted agencies to CAA Base, which is well-known for closing deals. However, let’s watch how it plays out.

“I think currently it’s looking less likely he’ll move in January, maybe more likely in the summer,” he continued. “He has a contract in the summer of 2025.” However, I’ve been told not to rule out free agency the following summer, so stay tuned for further information.

“When you consider your alternatives, Arsenal has Financial Fair Play [FFP] issues, so when they do receive funding, they will need to use it on David Raya.

“An attacker is what Chelsea wants, but is he the proper age and profile? In contrast to what some stories claim, I don’t believe he is now high on their list. The ownership crisis and lack of clarity surrounding Manchester United.

“Tottenham is entertaining to watch, but as things stand right now, I think they’re doing really well. We’ll see that in person tomorrow night against Chelsea.”

Toney has already publicly expressed his desire to explore for a new challenge, thus it appears that he will eventually depart Brentford.

The striker was suspended last season but still managed to score 20 goals in 33 Premier League games.

Toney’s connections to a number of elite teams come as no surprise, but Brentford is rumored to be asking at least £80 million for the forward.

Toney might be an exception to Spurs’ recent pattern of overpaying for big-name acquisitions.

It’s no secret that Tottenham hasn’t signed a contract to replace Kane, and even with Son’s outstanding preseason play, they may need to add to this position in the upcoming windows.
