A few English Premier League players—including Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite—who do not currently have international caps are rumored to have been called up to earlier Gareth Southgate squads, according to The Times.
Because of his history of awarding England debuts, Southgate resisted the temptation to include Branthwaite in past squads, along with former Evertonian Anthony Gordon, Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, who has since been called up, according to the UK-based newspaper on November 13.
During their international break this month, which includes their Euro qualifying matches against Serbia and Northern Ireland, the Goodison defender—who has been a standout for Everton this season—is once again named in the Young Lions team.
The team is well-established, comparatively youthful, has advanced far in competitions, and its skill pool is envied by many, according to The Times. Hardly has the bar been set higher.
“Southgate initially resisted the temptation to include Palmer, Anthony Gordon, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Jarrad Branthwaite in recent squads,” the statement reads.
On its way
After stints on loan at PSV and Blackburn Rovers, Branthwaite is now a permanent fixture in Sean Dyche’s preferred starting lineup at Everton, and he has every right to be after some recent incredible top-tier performances.
Since taking over for dependable Dyche lieutenant Michael Keane and partnering with James Tarkowski at the center of the Everton defense, the 21-year-old has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Thus far in this campaign, Branthwaite has established himself as an unstoppable force and is an absolute necessity for both the Young Lions and Dyche at Goodison Park.
Undoubtedly, the Toffees jewel will need to continue developing with the under-21s and at Everton before he is ever considered for a senior England call-up.
Branthwaite will have to wait his turn, but it won’t be shocking to see him participate in a year because Gareth Southgate still has a limited number of outstanding choices, like Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi, and Levi Colwill.
