Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards deserves another chance in the starting lineup at the club. The Eagles have been leaking goals lately and the player could help solve the issue.

So, how comes Chris Richards deserves another opportunity in the Crystal Palace starting XI? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Crystal Palace signed Richards for £8.5m but the defender has struggled to feature consistently in the starting XI.

He has only made 16 appearances since joining the Eagles, with only eight of these being starts. He has impressed when played at centre-back, winning the Man of the Match award on occasions. Richards is also versatile and can play at right-back.

We have seen him feature only once in this position, in a 2-0 loss away to Wolves towards the end of last season, when no Palace player put in a good performance.

Now feels like the perfect time to give Richards another chance in this position and the 23 year-old deserves the opportunity to prove he can succeed at this level.

Crystal Palace made four new signings over the summer, including another centre-back in Rob Holding, but arguably they didn’t get enough depth.

We are seeing an issue this season at right-back, with veteran and club legend Joel Ward struggle to keep up with the pace in matches.

Ward has been at fault for a few goals this season, but only due to the fact that he is coming to the end of his career and he is not as good as he used to be.

No doubt he could have defended better against Everton on the weekend and he was also subbed off by Roy Hodgson in the victory over Burnley, something that never usually happens.

Due to this, it feels like the perfect opportunity for Richards to be given another shot at right-back, especially with their next match being against Luton.

Palace have leaked a fair few goals over October and November so changing it up at the back may be a very good option.

The “very strong” defender is young, and has definitely shown promise. he definitely has the pace to play at full-back, so it would be great to see him tested there again by Roy Hodgson.
