Marcelo Bielsa wanted former Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips to marry his daughter according to Patrick Bamford.
Bamford thrived under Bielsa and left his critics in the dust. He scored 17 Premier League goals for Leeds during their first season back in the top flight.
As part of Joe Wilkinson’s new podcast, My Mate’s a Footballer, the comedian interview professional footballers that he hopes to befriend. Bamford made an appearance and was asked by Wilkinson who the most popular player he knows is.
“Do you know what, Kalvin Phillips,” said Bamford. “So Bielsa, he said to Kalvin if he had to pick one footballer to marry his daughter, he would pick him.”
Phillips came through the youth setup at Leeds in 2014 and recently left to join Manchester City in 2022. He made over 200 appearances for the Yorkshire-based outfit and starred as the ‘number-six’ in Bielsa’s tactical setup.
The fortunes of both Phillips and Bamford have fallen since Bielsa’s time at the club. Phillips is likely to leave City soon having found himself well out of the picture while Bamford’s goalscoring record has dropped off dramatically.
Bielsa was a legendary figure at Elland Road. He took Leeds back to the top division while playing an attractive style and finished in the top ten during his first Premier League season.
When he left, many Leeds fans were crestfallen as it was clear he had made such a positive impact on the area. He met some of them outside Elland Road after being sacked by the club and the scenes were emotional for both parties.
