Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have shared their opinion on if Everton star Jordan Pickford should be Engand’s number one at Euro 2024.

Pickford started both of the recent international games for Gareth Southgate’s side as England beat Malta 2-0 and drew 1-1 with North Macedonia to secure their place in Pot 1 for the finals next summer.

And when asked by a fan on their Rest Is Football podcast (22 November) to name their best XI for the opening game right now, they were unanimous in the decision to put Pickford between the sticks.

“We’re all agreed on Pickford aren’t we?” Richards asked, before Shearer and Lineker agreed.

There have been calls in recent times for Pickford to be dropped for England because of the way that Everton have performed on the pitch, despite that being in spite of his own individual performances.

Pickford has been a world class shotstopper for years now and has never let England down, often rising to the occasion at the biggest tournaments with excellent showings.

He has earned the trust of the nation and the team’s manager, and there is simply no reason to replace him heading into a tournament that many people have England down as favourites to win.

Aaron Ramsdale, Sam Johnstone and Nick Pope are his rivals for the jersey, but it’s clear that right now at least he is better than them all and deserves to start ahead of them.

After the tournament and after Southgate likely leaves that could change, but there’s no doubt that if he’s fit Pickford should be starting in Germany next summer for the Three Lions.
