Kevin Thelwell names the one most ‘DIFFICULT’ thing as Everton sporting director 😬1️⃣

Everton have had to navigate some tricky obstacles in the last few years, but none compare to their points deduction.

As a sanction that has not been seen in the Premier League since 2010, when Portsmouth were docked nine points for entering administration, it was a punishment that shocked the footballing world.

The Toffees have since lodged their appeal against the ruling, with the likelihood of its success widely debated.

The likes of Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell must feel aggrieved that, despite the efforts they continue to put in, the misconduct of the past continues to set them back.

However, the tangible progress is there for all to see, with the director of football even outlining it recently.

Whilst speaking on the VS Sporting Director’s podcast, he would reveal the true extent of the hardships he has faced.

What has Kevin Thelwell said about Everton?

He noted: ‘It was probably made more difficult by the fact that I remember Everton in the space that it was and currently isn’t, with the greatest respect, which I think helps me because I know what the standard is and the standard isn’t where we are right at this moment.

‘But I hope everybody can see why we’re in this space at this moment and I think I’m pleased in particular the fans understand this more than anybody and are collectively being very very patient, which is always a worry when you take on a job where it’s got some difficulty, and hopefully together what we can do is, over the course of time, we can help her navigate these tricky waters that we’re in and hopefully sail back into much better space.

‘Get back to where we belong, which is getting back to being amongst the elite, hopefully competing for trophies and titles, getting back into Europe and of course playing in what is going to be an unbelievable world-class stadium on the banks of the River Mersey.’

Why were Everton given a points deduction?

On the 17th of November, Everton

were found guilty of having breached the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

It was a decision made by an independent commission, but also one wholeheartedly backed by the division, who reportedly pushed for an increased 12-point sanction.

The aforementioned rules state that any club can only lose a maximum of £105m over any three-year rolling period. The Toffees, under the careless leadership of Farhad Moshiri, had instead lost £371.8m.

Whilst the bulk of that was written off due to new stadium expenses, it was clearly not enough to avoid the harshest points penalty in the history of the Premier League.

What has drawn controversy is the fact that, after deductions, the Merseyside outfit were adjudged to have overspent by just £19m.
