Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has discussed the prospect of Anthony Gordon playing against Everton at Goodison Park on Thursday night

Newcastle United Eddie Howe has delivered a clear message for Anthony Gordon ahead of his return to Everton.

The 22-year-old forward left the Toffees for £45m, midway through last season, much to the frustration of some Everton supporters as the club battled against the threat of relegation. Gordon returned to Goodison Park in April, as Newcastle recorded a 4-1 victory, but only featured as a late cameo in front of a depleted home crowd.

When the two sides meet again on Thursday night, the situation is likely to be completely different. Gordon will be expected to start for Howe’s team, following his impressive recent form, and will receive a much louder response from Everton fans, as a result. However, the Newcastle manager has provided Gordon with a key instruction, ahead of the game.

Would Jimmy G And The Broncos Be A Playoff Team?

“It’s a difficult question to answer,” Howe answered in his press conference on Wednesday. “I don’t know. Anthony has to be prepared for whatever reception he gets and take it, but really just focus on his football. That’s all he can do.

“If you start thinking about external things that you can’t control then you take your mind off what you need to control. He needs to control all the things that make his performance as good as he can, which he did against Manchester United, and has been doing on a consistent basis lately.”

“It’s great to see him score goals, assist goals and look like he is enjoying his football because if a player is in that frame of mind, they are going to perform better,” Howe added. “That’s all he’s got to try and do – just enjoy the game.”

Meanwhile, Everton will be focused on keeping the Finch Farm academy graduate quiet at Goodison. The Newcastle forward has registered five goals and six assists in 13 league games, including scoring the decisive goal against Manchester United at the weekend.
