Chelsea have the chance to immediately bounce back from their defeat to Manchester United earlier this week when they face Everton on Sunday. The Blues were miles off the pace at Old Trafford against Erik ten Hag’s side this past Wednesday and were ultimately made to pay with a Scott McTominay double giving the hosts a deserved three points.

One positive from the evening was Cole Palmer who netted his first Chelsea goal from open play with an exquisite left-footed finish but that moment of quality was in vein. After the game,

“Disappointed because we didn’t start the game well and the feeling is they start better than us, more energy than us, we didn’t match their energy,” he told reporters in his post-match press conference. “I think they were better. If we talk about overall, I think they were better than us. Nothing today.

I think we create chances enough, we draw the first half 1-1, we had some good chances that we should score and be more clinical, that was the problem. Second half we start well but then we concede and of course then we miss the energy to be more aggressive.

“We had some chances but not enough to be in the game again. Overall, I think my feeling is that they were better than us and deserve the three points.” Given the hectic December schedule, Chelsea only have to wait a few days before returning to action, although they face another difficult challenge at Goodison Park against Everton.

Sean Dyche’s side have picked up back-to-back wins in the last five days with victories against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle and that is perhaps why Paul Merson, when giving his Premier League predictions, has gone against backing the club he supports.

“Everton are a much better team away from home, but I think they will beat Chelsea this time around,” he wrote in his Sportskeeda predictions column. “Mauricio Pochettino’s side are missing something, I can’t quite point my finger at it. They did well against Man City but were absolutely blown away by Newcastle, particularly in the second half.

Mauricio Pochettino, Manager of Chelsea, looks dejected after the team's defeat in the Premier League match between Manchester United and Chelsea FC at Old Trafford on December 06, 2023 in Manchester, England.

“Manchester United also got the better of them, so it’s not been an easy few weeks for Chelsea. I’ve never seen a team with such high-quality players give the ball away as much as Chelsea did against Manchester United, so things aren’t going well for them at the moment.

“I’d be shocked if Chelsea won this game. Everton are creating enough chances, but they haven’t put many of them away. However, I think they’ll do enough to secure a comfortable win this weekend.”

Prediction: Everton 3-1 Chelsea
