MOTD studio laughs as Martin Keown mocks Everton star James Tarkowski in defeat v Wolves

James Tarkowski’s defending was the butt of the jokes from Martin Keown as the pundit analysed the highlights of Wolves’ 3-0 victory over Everton.

The 31-year-old was part of Sean Dyche’s back five as the Toffees struggled to handle Wolves’ attack at Molineux, shipping three goals from Max Kilman, Matheus Cunha and Michael Dawson.

Having scrambled to defend against Wolves for the majority of Saturday’s thrashing, the Match of the Day studio began laughing at one moment from the Everton defender as Pablo Sarabia made him look a fool.

“Look there, Tarkowski has got to buy a ticket to get back into the ground,” Keown said on Match of the Day (30 December) as Sarabia spun the defender in the middle of the park, prompting laughter from Gary Lineker and Dion Dublin.

“Stay in your three and invite them on while in your shape.”

Getting it all wrong

This was not the only time this happened against Wolves. However, it does seem like the only time Everton have struggled to make an impact since their loss to Manchester United last month.

The Toffees went on a four-match winning streak after that game, claiming victories to nil against Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Burnley.

Results have stuttered in recent weeks, losing to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. But that can be forgiven against these two top sides, performing well against them but narrowly missing out on any reward.

The Wolves match, on the other hand, identified as a one-off as Dyche appeared to adopt a different tactic that did not work. Rayan Ait Nouri and Nelson Semedo ran riot down the wings, while Cunha, Sarabia and Hee-Chan Hwang had free reign in the final third.

In other Everton news, The Esk has been left stunned by an “appalling” £100million Toffees cash update.
