The KEY clause that Everton ‘want’ to include in Hannibal Mejbri loan

Everton’s start to the January transfer window has been a characteristically quiet one, especially given their well-documented financial struggles.

Few expected fireworks, and with Kevin Thelwell even emerging to temper fans’ expectations further, this was a month on Merseyside few were excited for.

However, that has not completely neutralised any opportunities in the market, with their reported interest in Manchester United’s Hannibal Mejbri providing a fine loan target with which Sean Dyche could work.

The only issue is that their pursuit of the Tunisia international came late in the day, after the 20-year-old had already pledged the rest of his campaign to Spanish side Sevilla.

With the prospect of playing regularly in the Premier League sure to have tempted the youngster, Fabrizio Romano has now sought to clarify his thoughts on the matter whilst also revealing a key transfer clause that the Toffees want to include in the deal.

He told The United Stand: ‘He almost decided his future between Friday and Saturday because he had proposals obviously for a loan from Olympique Lyon, from Freiburg and from Sevilla. He told Sevilla “OK I want to join you,” so his decision was very clear to go to Sevilla on loan, then what happened is that after 2-3 hours Everton approached the player and they also approached Manchester United for a loan deal negotiation, and now it’s on the player.

‘Hannibal has decided if he wants to respect his pact with Sevilla or if he wants to consider this possibility to stay in the Premier League and go to Everton, so this is going to be the player’s decision.

‘It’s also important to see what kind of deal Man United will accept because these clubs want to include an option to buy in the deal for Hannibal, but I believe that United will ask for a buy-back clause, so there’s still some work to do before saying that Hannibal is gone. But I still think that he will go on loan.’

What would Hannibal Mejbri offer Everton?

Although far from the finished product, Mejbri’s potential arrival at Goodison Park would offer another vital slice of squad depth across a number of positions, as well as a key injection of dynamism and aggression.

Many still remember his brief but impactful 2022 cameo in the Red Devils’ crushing loss to Liverpool, in which the academy graduate was delighted to kick lumps out of their bitter rivals to earn praise from Gary Neville.

He clearly cares about his football, and that alone will have Dyche’s eyes lighting up.

Having spent last season on loan with Birmingham City, the creative youngster shone for a side languishing in mid-table, with little hope of a playoff push.

His one goal and five assists outlined an admirable return for someone enjoying their first full season in senior football, and he has continued his progression by even scoring his first-ever Premier League goal this term too: a consolation scorcher against Brighton and Hove Albion.

With a clear work ethic and the flashes of quality to supplement that too, Mejbri is certain to bolster Dyche’s squad, should he choose to remain in England to fight for his spot.

Their interest in including a buy-back clause should offer a show of faith to help him thrive too.
