Club will be tempted to sell their £26m captain to West Ham or Everton

Ajax may be tempted to cash in on Steven Bergwijn if West Ham United make an offer to bring the former Tottenham Hotspur forward back to the Premier League.

HITC Football understands that, just 18 months after Tottenham accepted a £26 million bid from the Eredivisie giants, the Ajax captain could potentially be on his way back to very familiar surroundings.

West Ham United, Spurs’ London rivals, are keen on the Dutch international, with Steven Bergwijn also on the radar of Crystal Palace, Brentford, Fulham, Wolves and Everton.

In an ideal world, Ajax would prefer to retain Bergwijn’s services beyond the winter window. Selling your captain in the middle of an already very underwhelming season, interim technical director Kelvin de Lang accepts, is not exactly a great look.

But such is the size of his contract, and considering Ajax’s financial concerns, the chance to recoup much of that £26 million investment is one the Netherlands’ most high-profile club may be tempted to .

West Ham like former Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn

“We asked Kelvin de Lang and he said; ‘He is our captain. You don’t want to get rid of him in January’,” Ajax reporter Lentin Goodijk tells Voetbal International. “Ajax’s greatest wish (is not to) immediately kick Bergwijn out the door.

“(But selling Bergwijn) is attractive to Ajax because of their financial situation. He has a big contract. (If West Ham make a big bid), they will think about it.”

“There has been interest in him for some time, also from other countries. He still has the international reputation and the market value to leave for another club.”

‘Very disappointing’ at Ajax

Bergwijn, despite a stunning debut goal against Manchester City in 2020, struggled to nail down a regular starting spot at Tottenham. The former PSV Eindhoven talisman has also underwhelmed since returning to the Netherlands with Ajax, club legend Wim Kieft labelling his impact – or a lack thereof – ‘very disappointing’.

Then again, in Bergwijn’s defence, you’d struggle to find many Ajax players who have performed at their best of late. And, at just 26, there is a feeling that Bergwijn still has a lot of potential to unlock.

West Ham could free up funds by shifting Danny Ings out the door this month. That, HITC understands, is proving to be easier said than done, however.
