Arsenal are still tracking Everton midfielder Amadou Onana but they are yet to open talks to sign him, according to Ryan Taylor of The Mirror.

The Toffees are “open to offers” for the 22-year-old midfielder, but as of now, there hasn’t been any active movement.

Chelsea are also keen to sign the “midfield powerhouse”. There have been suggestions that discussions have started between Arsenal and Everton over signing Onana, but Taylor has dismissed such reports.

The Gunners are operating carefully in the transfer market. They spent around £208million last summer and their net spend has amounted to nearly £400million in the past three calendar years.

Having signed Declan Rice on a big-money deal in the summer, it looks like they probably will pass down the opportunity to sign Onana even though the Belgium international would be a terrific addition to the squad.

Interesting scenario
Onana is a key player for the Toffees and vital to their survival hopes. He has been outstanding under Sean Dyche and the Toffees would him to stay at the club.

At the same time, he is a bankable asset and the Gunners will have to pay a hefty fee to sign him. From Everton’s perspective, a sale would alleviate their financial problems following their ten-point deduction.

Taylor suggests that Arsenal will be ready to push for a transfer if there’s an opportunity. At the moment, however, a big-money transfer doesn’t look likely.

Mikel Arteta probably could look to bolster his full-back areas while there have been suggestions that the Gunners could sign a new striker in January. They have been linked with a host of players, but the Gunners are cautious about their financial play situation.

Arsenal have below par in recent weeks but they are expected to improve once key players return from injuries and international duties.
