Blackburn Rovers are braced for summer interest in star midfielder Adam Wharton.

According to Football Insider, the Lancashire outfit will do everything they can to hold onto the 19-year-old this month.

However, they anticipate that there will be plenty of interest in the player by the end of the campaign.

There are several Premier League sides circling around the talented teenager, but Blackburn are demanding a premium figure this winter in order to stave off potential interest.

But the club is more resigned to potentially losing him at the end of the season, and have set an asking price of between £10 and 15 million.

Adam Wharton transfer latest

The likes of Tottenham, Everton and Crystal Palace have all shown a keen interest in Wharton. Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have all also been mentioned as teams keeping tabs on the youngster in recent months.

Wharton enjoyed a breakout campaign last year, featuring 18 times in his debut season as a first team member in the Rovers squad. He has since become a key part of Jon Dahl Tomasson’s plans, starting 20 of their opening 26 league games, coming off the bench a further four times.

He has contributed one goal and three assists from his deeper midfield role, and is now catching the attention of several top flight clubs. Blackburn are aiming to fight for promotion to the Premier League this season, having finished seventh last term.

However, it has been a difficult year for Rovers, and the reality of the situation is that promotion looks unlikely without a remarkable run of form over the next few months.

Failure to go up will see pressure put on the future of Wharton, but Rovers are confident that they can at least hold onto the 19-year-old beyond this winter window.

Blackburn Rovers league position

Championship Table (As it stands January 8th)
Team P GD Pts
17 Blackburn Rovers 26 -9 32
18 Plymouth Argyle 26 -2 29
19 Stoke City 26 -7 29

24 Rotherham United 26 -26 18

Blackburn are currently 17th in the Championship table, eight points adrift of the play-off places.

While not impossible, Rovers will need to significantly improve their form in order to gain ground on their promotion rivals.

Despite his injury record, Blackburn should keep faith and keep hold of one of their best striking assets. The gap to the relegation zone is 10 points, with 20 games remaining.

Next up for Tomasson’s side is a clash away to West Brom on 13 January, where the team will be looking to end a run of form that has seen Rovers winless in their last five league games. A 5-2 win last weekend in the FA Cup is their only victory since 12 December.

Blackburn are handling this situation well

Blackburn have made a mess of big transfer moves in the last couple of seasons, losing promising young players for relatively small figures, like Ashley Phillips, or letting key players go for nothing, like Ben Brereton Diaz.

However, their handling of Wharton has been much better.

The midfielder is an obvious talent, and there is a reason so many top Premier League sides are circling.

But they have offered him the right playing time, and have taken control of his contract situation to put them in a strong negotiating position.
