The choice to have him on the bench last night seems to have been made out of pure kindness.

O’Brien, a Forest loanee, has only made six appearances for Boro. He had surgery for a fractured leg in September, which has kept him away from the team.

Despite being better and recovering faster than expected, the 25-year-old player was never well enough to play yesterday night.

“It was just for him to be back around it as a presence,” Carrick stated to Teesside Live. He had no intention of playing.

What Michael Carrick has said about Lewis O’Brien

The choice to have him on the bench last night seems to have been made out of pure kindness.

O’Brien, a Forest loanee, has only made six appearances for Boro. He had surgery for a fractured leg in September, which has kept him away from the team.

Despite being better and recovering faster than expected, the 25-year-old player was never well enough to play yesterday night.

“It was just for him to be back around it as a presence,” Carrick stated to Teesside Live. He had no intention of playing.

“It was far too soon, but it was his next step of being in and around the group. We were stretched enough as it is, really, so it was an opportunity to get him in and around it.”

O’Brien will be desperate to play and prove a point to Forest

The midfielder has proved to be another pretty strange signing made by Forest.

Steve Cooper signed O’Brien following promotion to the Premier League and he cost Forest £10 million.

Last season, he was omitted from the 25-man squad in January and subsequently joined D.C. United on loan.

He still wasn’t part of Forest’s plans for 2023/24 and he was allowed to join Boro on loan before the transfer window closed.

O’Brien is a quality player on his day and in the EFL he should be capable of shining having done so with Huddersfield.

Forest gave the midfielder a contract until 2026 and the Reds will be hoping O’Brien can start producing the goods again.

With Nuno Espirito Santo now holding the reins at Forest, O’Brien might see that as a way back in once his loan deal is over.

In the short-term, he has to focus on getting fit and this gesture from Carrick last night can only boost O’Brien’s confidence.
