Sam Lammers has opened up to Dutch media about his Rangers form for the first time. And unsurprisingly, it wasn’t a very positive reflection. Let’s not beat around the bush, the Dutchman – who sealed a loan switch to Utrecht this month – has turned out to be a very expensive flop and it seems he realises this himself.

He was recruited to Ibrox by Michael Beale for a sum of £3.5m from Serie A side Atalanta and despite fans being aware of his atrocious goal record, there was an element of intrigue to his capture.

However, it became apparent quite quickly that Lammers doesn’t have what it takes to perform under pressure week in, week out as a Rangers player and fans have ridiculed him for months.

Bar one fantastic goal against Dundee and flashes of his decent technical ability – which Utrecht boss Ron Jans has been raving about recently – Lammers has been shocking. The 26-year-old’s goal output of two in 31 games tells you everything there is to know.

Lammers has now confessed to media back in his homeland that his goal tally in particular at Rangers was simply not at the standard it should have been at, exactly what every Gers supporter has been saying for the past few months.

He said of his poor return in front of goal: “Too little. I know that those figures are looked at for a striker, but you can also be important in other ways.”

It was then put to Lammers that his five transfers since 2020 have all been very underwhelming, to which he replied: “You shouldn’t think like that, it doesn’t make you happy.

“You never know how things would’ve turned out differently. I have gained many experiences, won prizes, and fought against relegation. The move to another club was logical for me because I wanted to get around to playing, like now at Utrecht.

“But it seems clear to me that it is better to stay in one place for a longer period of time. I’ve played quite a lot and coaches don’t put you up for nothing. Nevertheless, I am not satisfied with my numbers.”
