‘Unsure’ – Alan Stubbs slams ‘reluctant’ Everton ace after first half incident v Crystal Palace

Alan Stubbs slams ‘reluctant’ Nathan Patterson after ‘unsure’ first half incident in Everton v Crystal Palace

Alan Stubbs has slammed Nathan Patterson after a “reluctant” moment from the Everton player against Crystal Palace.

The comment was made in the first half of the FA Cup third round replay between the two clubs on Wednesday (17 January).

Stubbs believes Patterson ought to have attacked a ball across the box from the visitors midway through the first half at Goodison Park.

“On Patterson, I think when he’s got the ball at his feet and he’s looking forward, for example with the balls he’s playing to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, he’s okay,” Stubbs said on BBC Radio 5 Live Extra (8.11pm).

“But in the defensive part of his game, he can be a little bit reluctant, a little bit unsure in terms of decision making. There, he’s let it roll through him on the edge of the box where probably the better decision would have been to go forward really.”

More decisive moments from Patterson will surely come with age and game time, with the defender still in the very early stages of his career at the age of 22.

Despite his youth, the Scot has featured heavily under Sean Dyche this season, although his minutes on the pitch could dry up soon if Seamus Coleman can return to full fitness.

Still, the youngster is a great option for the Toffees, and has shown his ability time and again at both ends of the pitch.

The Toffees will be desperate to make it into the next round of this famous competition, with the players needing to give the fans something to cheer about this season.

The Everton faithful have stayed upbeat despite the issues behind the scenes at Goodison Park, which have largely involved financial problems.

Such problems led to a 10-point deduction in the Premier League, with another points deduction potentially going their way after another charge for breaching financial rules.
