Sheffield United are reportedly interested in signing Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall during this month’s transfer window.
The 27-year-old has struggled for game time this season for the Tricky Trees, playing seven and starting just five matches in the Premier League for the East Midlands club.
Former head coach Steve Cooper made Worrall train apart from the team with Scott McKenna, keeping him out of the first team picture.
The former Rangers loanee has only made one start since Nuno Espirito Santo arrived at the City Ground, and that was on January 7 during the FA Cup match against Blackpool, when he played the entire 90 minutes.
In an effort to delay their return to the Championship, Sheffield United is reportedly considering a bid for Worrall during the January transfer window, according to TEAMtalk.
In order to balance the books, the Tricky Trees are trying to offload players after Forest was recently found guilty of breaking the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.
Worrall has not been a regular member of the first team this season under Cooper or Santo, thus it is assumed that the East Midlanders are prepared to let go of the player.
In the latter part of 2023, Worrall was reportedly drawing attention from the Championship, with the 27-year-old being connected to both Middlesbrough and Leicester City, two of the top-tier pacesetters led by Michael Carrick.
It is currently unclear whether Forest would be open to selling the centre-back to a relegation rival, but nevertheless Sheffield United need to improve defensively to escape the bottom three.
Wilder’s Blades have conceded 51 goals in 21 Premier League matches so far in 2023-24, nine more than any other side in the division at this stage.
Due to the long-term injuries to Chris Basham and John Egan, the Yorkshire club has few choices in defense. Meanwhile, one of United’s backup players is reportedly drawing interest from a big European team.
Despite his team finishing last in the Premier League, 24-year-old Ahmedhodzic is making an impression at Bramall Lane and has reportedly drawn interest from Serie A winners Napoli for the center-back.
The Blades are getting ready in case the Bosnian decides to go this month, and it’s thought that Wilder is interested in Chris Mepham of Bournemouth.
Ben Brereton Diaz scored his first goal as a Blade this past Sunday in an exciting 2-2 draw with West Ham United. This weekend, Sheffield United will play Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup fourth round.
