Ben Godfrey was once touted as a future Everton captain but the out-of-favour defender might soon find himself heading for the Goodison Park exit door.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Genoa are considering a move for Godfrey and they could be an option via the 777 Partners connection given that the Miami-based private investment firm who are attempting to complete a takeover of Everton already own the Serie A outfit. He adds that discussions are taking place but more clubs are interested in the player.

Atalanta, another Italian team, courted Godfrey earlier this month; Leeds United has also been connected to the 26-year-old in recent days. Although York-born Godfrey might find it appealing to return to his home Yorkshire, similar to Mason Holgate, who is rumored to be on Sheffield United’s wanted list, manager Sean Dyche and director of football Kevin Thelwell could be faced with a difficult decision regarding the player’s destination—whether it be across the Pennines or to the shores of the Ligurian Sea.

The £20 million acquisition from Norwich City in 2020 has only made two starts for Everton this season, and that one came in the Premier League on December 16 against Burnley. Jarrad Branthwaite, the team’s breakout star, has formed an impressive partnership with James Tarkowski, who captains the team frequently when Seamus Coleman is out, so chances have been few and far between, with Michael Keane seemingly the first backup at center back.

The Goodison Park chiefs must decide whether to let go of the versatile Godfrey, who has also been used in both full-back positions and has even been used in midfield earlier in his career, given their relatively small squad. If something were to happen to any of those three players, though, the Blues would find themselves suddenly short in the middle of the backline.
